History

Friskies was first introduced to the public in the 1930s by Carnation and its subsidiary Albers Company. By 1973, Friskies had become one of five companies that controlled two-thirds of the $1.75 billion pet food market. The brand originated when Carnation experimented with dry food products for 3.5 years at Carnation Farms, initially with stray dogs in improvised cages, and later purebreds in a formal kennel.

Carnation International was formed in 1966 to market their pet food products internationally in Japan, Spain, France, England, Italy, and other countries. In 1985, Nestlé acquired Carnation for $3 billion and renamed it Nestlé/Carnation Food Company, before becoming a Nestlé subsidiary in 1992 under the name Friskies PetCare Company.

By 1992, Friskies accounted for 28.2% of the total pet food market.

In 2001, Friskies was merged with Nestlé’s other subsidiary, Ralston Purina, to form Nestlé Purina PetCare.
