History
American Tourister has a long and storied history in the United States, beginning in the 1930s when it was established as a manufacturer of durable, affordable luggage. Since then, the company has had several changes in parent companies – most notably, in 1992, Hillenbrand sold American Tourister to Astrum International Corp., a sales and manufacturing holding company. In 1995, Astrum split into two companies – Samsonite Corp. and Culligan Water Technologies.
In the mid-1990s, American Tourister was still a well-recognized luggage brand, largely thanks to their memorable advertising campaign featuring a gorilla throwing suitcases around. Unfortunately, in 1996 Samsonite announced that they were closing the Warren, Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida facilities, resulting in the loss of 137 jobs.
Since then, American Tourister has been sold back and forth between multiple owners, with Samsonite Group being the most recent one in 2018. Despite these changes, American Tourister remains one of the most recognizable luggage brands in the United States and continues to focus on creating durable and affordable luggage.
