History
In 2013, Arnold Kamler, the Chairman and CEO of Kent International Inc., decided to bring bicycle manufacturing back to the United States. After attending a Walmart Supplier Summit in Orlando, Florida, they found a suitable location but encountered an obstacle as there was no natural gas for five miles. However, after Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina, agreed to bring the natural gas lines to Manning SC, Arnold made a commitment to build the factory there.
Over the next two years, investments of more than $8 million were made in building improvements and machinery and by October 2014, BCA opened its doors with 47 local workers. In 2017, a 4 million dollar, fully automated powder coating operation was installed and 4 million dollars’ worth of robots and co-bots were purchased and used in assembly, which resulted in an increase of the workforce to 145 employees.
Currently, 20-25,000 bikes are produced every month, and with frame and fork building, the capacity will expand to 50,000 bikes per month on one shift.
About The Parent Company
Kent International
Kent International Inc., a bicycle manufacturer based in Parsippany, New Jersey, is the second largest bicycle manufacturer in the USA. It was founded in 1909 by Abraham Kamler, an immigrant to the USA, who opened a bicycle shop on the Lower East Side of New York City. Later, his son, the current president’s father, started Philkam Cycle in 1947, supplying bicycles and parts to stores across the Eastern United States.
The company changed its name to Kent International in 1958 and began manufacturing bicycles in Kearny, New Jersey in 1979. However, manufacturing operations were moved overseas in 1990, but returned to the USA when a new factory was built in Clarendon County, South Carolina in 2014.
